In America, Wasn't Segregation More Expensive To Maintain And Costly To Businesses?

One thing I will never understand about segregation is the fact that people were fine with paying to build two of everything instead of one. In most cases, the "Colored" facilities were much more subpar, but you're still paying for 1.5 facilities instead of one. 2 sets of bathrooms, 2 water fountains, 2 waiting rooms, 2 dining rooms, etc.

And then the businesses who outright refused to serve "colored" people. For many years, even at the height of segregation, blacks outnumbered whites in some southern states. So you're just going to lose an entire stream of revenue. I think of the scene in Remember The Titans when the restaurant owner refused to seat the football players because they were black, even though the restaurant was practically empty. You've got an empty restaurant and four hungry football players, and you're just gonna throw away money?

Even if I was a racist, eventually the taxpayer/businessman would come out and say "this is stupid, we're setting money on fire."
