If a ACAB, then how should laws and personal safety and freedoms be enforced and protected?

Genuinely clueless here, but I live in the US and hear about defunding the police and how cops are bastards, pigs, fascists, murderers or other things. While I don’t disagree that these things happen and there are definitely bad cops out there, there are a lot of social problems and we tend to be a very violent society compared to other societies (ie Europe or Asia).

What I’m wondering is what happens if the police are severely curtailed or eliminated, what happens in a number of situations where one usually contacts police. What is the proposed way to enforce people to comply with laws and prevent people from being harmed and deprived of property? Do we become citizen responders? Are we on our own?

Some examples:

-I’m being assaulted by a random stranger -I need someone to prevent a burglarizing my home -I’m being abused by my partner

-Someone runs into my car and doesn’t want to pay for the damage -Someone steals my wallet or purse -Someone wants to live in my property without my permission

While I’m definitely not pro-police, I think something is needed to deal with these situations, but I don’t see how you get around someone who is the bad guy and enforces the law even though it’s not popular. What do you think and what is the opposing perspective?
