Capital Region grocery prices

I'm originally from Albany, now living in the Boston area. Whenever I return home, I'm amazed by how expensive food prices are in the region compared to where I live now. Even friends from home who now live in San Francisco say the same. Am I just imagining this? If this is true, why? A lack of competition in the grocery sector here? Small market?
